Feed Grains and Forage

چکیده
rarily checked in 1932 because of the short corn crop in the western Corn Belt in 1931. Indications are that the increase in hog production is now being resumed. Low prices for cows have resulted in the holding back of dairy and beef cows, and breeding stock on farms is now at the highest level in the history of this country. Sheep numbers, which reached a new high record in 1931, were reduced somewhat by the unfavorable winter of 1931-32 but it is still uncertain how far this decrease will continue. Low feed prices have encouraged the use of horses and mules, but the supply of breeding stock is so low that horse numbers are sure to continue to decline for several years. The extent to which this increase in feed-grain and livestock production will continue is uncertain and depends largely upon the relationship that will come about in the next few years between livestock and livestockproduct prices and the prices of cash crops. Substitution of neutral detergent fiber from forage with neutral detergent fiber from by-products in the diets of lactating cows.
Four lactating dairy cows that were ruminally and duodenally cannulated were used in an experiment with a 4 x 4 Latin square design to determine the effects of the substitution of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from forage with NDF from wheat middlings, corn gluten feed, or a blend of distillers dried grains and hominy. Dietary crude protein and NDF averaged 18 and 31%, respectively, for the die...
متن کاملFeeding of Wet Corn Milling Byproducts to Beef Cattle
Corn milling byproducts are expected to increase dramatically in supply. Two primary types of milling processes currently exist, resulting in quite different feed products. The dry milling process produces distillers grains plus solubles, and the wet milling process produces corn gluten feed. These feeds can be marketed as wet feed, or they can be dried and marketed as either dry corn gluten fe...
متن کاملForage Crises? Extending Forages and Use of Non-forage Fiber Sources
Forage availability is sometimes limited because of poor growing conditions or because of insufficient land base on individual farms. In addition, forage fiber can limit feed intake, particularly for high producing cows, and forage quality is highly variable. Therefore, there is continual interest in alternatives to forages in diets for dairy cows. Decreasing the forage content of diets require...
متن کاملGrowing Small Grains for Forage in Virginia
Cereal crops are used throughout the world for livestock feed. When they are managed properly they provide excellent grazing and high-quality silage or hay. It is important to remember that grazing should occur during the vegetative stage and silage or hay harvest should occur during flowering to early seed fill. Corn is one of the few annual crops that will provide quality forage after seed ma...
متن کاملNutritional Disorders in Beef Cattle - FSA3071
Nutritional disorders associated with both forage and feed consump tion can have a large impact on the profitability of beef cattle operations. Forages are an important component of beef cattle production systems in Arkansas. Most cowcalf and stocker cattle enterprises in Arkansas rely heavily on foragebased nutritional programs. Forages are used for both livestock grazing and hay production...
متن کاملPerformance of Beef Replacement Heifers Supplemented with Dried Distillers Grains or a Mixture of Soybean Meal and Ground Sorghum Grain
The feed, labor, and equipment costs of developing heifers in a confined feeding system are relatively high. High Plains beef producers can reduce input costs by developing heifers on dormant native range; however, heifers are typically unable to consume sufficient crude protein (CP) from the low-quality (< 7% CP) forage base. Insufficient dietary protein reduces forage digestion and performanc...
